These cats were considered a "national treasure" in Russia, and their export was not allowed until after the 1991 revolution.

They protected the artworks in the Hermitage from rodents, and they continue to do so.

Here are some of their interesting qualities:

• Siberians have low levels of the allergenic protein FEL-1 in their saliva. Some breeders have developed lines of Siberians that test negative for FEL-1. A cat like this is truly hypoallergenic and safe for allergic individuals. Breeders will allow you to spend time with this breed of cat to test your reaction before you choose one.

• Unlike other domestic cats, Siberians enjoy the company of other animals, whether they are cats, dogs, or people. They purr when they are with you, showing that you are their trusted person. They like to cuddle and be close to you. In nature, it has often been observed that the whole group helps to raise kittens, creating family bonds.

• They have been called "the cat for dog lovers." Siberians often enjoy playing fetch, bringing you a ball, greeting you at the door, and waking you up with a gentle nudge in the morning. (The last one can sometimes be annoying. Nobody's perfect.)

• Siberians have a wide vocabulary, which includes chirps, squirrel-like squeaks, and several other sounds that seem to have meaning. They constantly try to communicate with you.

• Their fur is as soft as a rabbit's. They are beautiful!

• They generally love water, often seeking to bathe in the tap water, and some will join you in the shower.

• They are intelligent, curious, even-tempered, and often have large round eyes.

  Most people comment on their beauty, but their qualities as companions are what make them even more beautiful.
